Incoming and First-Year Law Students

Pre-Law Students

Law and Pre-Law Coaching

Are you a current or incoming law student?

Whether you’re an incoming law student nervous about your first semester, a current student looking to score at the top of your class and land a competitive associateship, or a pre-law student looking to prepare for admissions, Tierney Education’s Law Coaches are prepared to help!

Law School is entirely different from undergrad, and it comes with its own unique set of challenges. You’re now being graded on a curve, and your performance depends not only on working hard, but performing better than classmates.

What many incoming law students don't realize is that your first semester of law school is one of the most important. Often, you only have your first semester grades when applying for 2L associateships, Law Review, and clinics. These experiences often can lead to your full time job after graduation, making it crucial for you to succeed!

Who are our Law Coaches?

Our experienced Law School coaches are current or previous Penn State Law students who excelled academically and were ranked in the top ten of their class. They have held positions on Law Review, secured competitive summer associateships in Big Law, and earned CALI awards through their coursework.

Ready to learn how to brief cases and handle cold calls like a pro? Our law school coaches help incoming students start on the right foot by learning the ins and outs of law school before it starts. Our law coaches will show you how to read hundreds of pages like a lawyer, what your professor is looking for in a cold call answer, and how to navigate your first semester without sacrificing your grades.

Developing these strategies over your first semester will ensure you’re ready to handle the rest of law school and have a solid transcript when you apply to 2L associateships in the Spring of your first year of law school.

Here are some example topics we focus on with Incoming 1L Students:

  • How to brief cases and prepare for cold calls

  • Reading and Writing like a Law Student

  • Outlining strategies and exam prep

  • Summer associateships and Job Search

  • Law Review

We offer support to students at any point in their law school career, whether it be preparing for applications and taking LSAT or finishing up your last year of law school. If you are a current undergraduate seeking guidance and support for your upcoming application to law school, we’d love to help!

We offer individual pre-law coaching sessions or can work pre-law mentorship into our regular academic coaching for undergraduates. For more information on our undergraduate academic coaching, check out this page.

These are some of the topics we focus on with Pre-Law students:

  • Preparing for the LSAT

  • LSAT tutoring and resources

  • Law school applications

  • Creating a school list

  • Being a strong applicant

What to Expect During an Academic Coaching Session at Tierney Education

One of the most common questions we encounter is, “What exactly does an academic coach do?” At Tierney Education, our team of academic coaches works collaboratively to help students—and their parents—navigate and take control of the educational journey with confidence.

Individualized Sessions

We offer packages of varying frequency and length to find the best fit for you. Most of our clients choose to meet weekly or every other week in order to work on long-term goals and stay on track. However, we also offer individual sessions if time permits. During your consultation, we are happy to set up a package that works for you!

These sessions are flexible and are fully tailored to the student’s needs and goals. Below is an example of what some of these sessions look like and some of the ways we work with students. The first part of these sessions is typically focused on current classes. In order to keep track of law school readings, case briefs, and coursework, we utilize a system we’ve developed called a course organizer. We’ve revised our traditional course organizer to fit the needs of law students. This organizer keeps track of exams, research assignments, writing assignments, deadlines, and weekly course readings.

The remaining time is personalized. We tailor this to every student, whether that means exploring internships and careers, building strong study strategies, or other executive functioning skills.

Here are some examples of what we can work on during this time.

Ongoing Communication and Expertise

Our law school coaches aim to build strong connections so that their students feel comfortable texting them with questions or concerns outside of their scheduled meetings. You can feel comfortable reading out to your coach to talk through a stressful exam, ask for advice, or share a win in a class with.

Our coaches will also know the ins and outs of scheduling your courses and applying for things like Law Review, so you’ll have an expert to guide you through the timeline and a resource for any questions.

Lasting Mentorship

Throughout their time working with a law coach, students will learn how to make strong connections and network with peers and professionals in their fields of interest.Even after their time working with a coach is complete, students will retain that connection to lean on during their time in law school and beyond.
