Tierney Education Expands Academic Coaching and Tutoring Services to Pittsburgh

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Tierney Education, a Pennsylvania-based academic coaching and tutoring company, has expanded its services to students at the University of Pittsburgh.
After building its academic support programs in State College, where Tierney Education supports more than 200 students each semester, the company is now offering tutoring services to Pitt students and building a local team in Pittsburgh.
Tierney Education currently has two tutors serving the Pitt community and is actively interviewing additional tutors as the company expands its coverage of Pitt courses. Both peer and professional tutoring options are available, including in-person tutoring in Pittsburgh.
“Pittsburgh felt like the natural place for us to expand,” said James Tierney, founder of Tierney Education. “We already work with families who have connections to Pittsburgh, it’s close enough for us to remain involved as we grow, and most importantly, we’ve seen what this type of personalized academic support can do for college students in State College. We’re excited to start building that same kind of community at Pitt.”
More Than Getting Through the Next Exam
Tierney Education's approach to tutoring emphasizes learning and understanding rather than shortcuts.
Students can work one-on-one with peer or professional tutors for support in challenging college courses. As the Pittsburgh team grows, Tierney Education will continue recruiting tutors with strong subject knowledge who can also explain difficult material clearly and help students become more confident learners.
Academic coaching services will also be available to Pitt students, with virtual and in-person options. Tierney Education's academic coaching focuses on skills such as organization, time management, studying, accountability, and developing sustainable systems for navigating college.
The company also plans to offer executive-level tutoring and consultations for Spring 2027.

Tierney Education was founded by James Tierney, an educator and entrepreneur who spent seven years teaching economics at Penn State. Today, the company works with more than 35 tutors and educators and brings more than 15 years of experience in college education to its work with students.
Pittsburgh represents Tierney Education's first major expansion beyond State College and an important step toward bringing its approach to students and families in additional communities.
“We know that being successful in State College doesn't automatically mean students and families at Pitt are going to trust us,” Tierney said. “That's something we have to earn. We want to do that the same way we've done it here: find great people, do good work, and focus on helping students become better, more independent learners.”
