From High School to College: Easing the Transition with Tierney Education

There is a lot to do when preparing to start college! The summer between high school and college is filled with excitement, nerves, and a never ending list of tasks to complete and things to buy. We understand this challenge and are here to help!

Common Transition Challenges
Making the leap from high school to college isn’t just about academics. Many students find themselves adjusting to a new level of responsibility as they keep track of assignments and deadlines, often for the first time without reminders from teachers or parents. Managing a new schedule and learning to navigate campus logistics can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re juggling classes in unfamiliar buildings. Balancing study time, social life, and self-care becomes a new challenge as you work to establish routines that support both your academic goals and your well-being. Building good habits for academic success takes intention and practice, but with the right strategies, you can set yourself up for a smooth transition.

To help you face these challenges with confidence, we’re sharing a practical checklist created by Kimberly Tierney, our Director of Academic Coaching. Use Kim’s guide to stay organized, prepared, and ready to make the most of your first year at Penn State.

Kim’s Transition Checklist for Incoming PSU Students
Get Organized

    •    Find a planner that works for you (digital or paper).
    •    Set up your Google Calendar with class times and important events.
    •    Create a Google Drive folder for each class to store syllabi, notes, and assignments.

Prepare Your Study Tools

    •    Purchase notebooks if you prefer handwritten notes, or explore note-taking apps like Notability, OneNote, or GoodNotes.

    •    Make a school supplies shopping list and get everything early—avoid the rush! Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Plan Your Logistics

    •    Confirm your move-in date and make a plan for the day.
    •    Double-check your class schedule and make sure you know where each class is located.

Set Up for Academic Success

    •    Block out study time in your daily schedule—ideally in campus study spaces, not your room.
    •    Create a realistic budget for spending throughout the semester.
    •    Set clear goals for your first year—academics, social life, and well-being included!
