Dr. Ian Helfrick
Economics Tutor
Ian is an economist who builds decision-focused models—starting from the question students (and clients) need answered and picking the right tool for the job. His toolkit spans micro/macro theory, game theory, political economy, labor economics, economic development, international trade, econometrics (panel/causal, time series, spatial), forecasting, and financial modeling, with an emphasis on clear intuition and step-by-step problem solving. He has taught and assisted courses at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, Indiana University–Bloomington, and Georgia Tech. As a tutor and remote advisor, Ian has mentored more than 400 students over a 10 year career, ranging from introductory levels through graduate and professional clients. Academically, Ian completed his doctoral degree in Economics in 2024 at the Georgia Institute of Technology (with a minor in Quantitative Psychology). He also holds additional degrees including an M.S. in Geographic Information Science & Technology and Economics (Georgia Tech), M.A. in Economics (Indiana University), M.Sc. in Economics & Public Policy (Barcelona School of Economics), and a B.A. in Economics (UNC–Chapel Hill).
Random Fact: I'm cat-loving black belt who plays guitar and loves traveling! I used to do stunt choreography a long time ago, so that's kind of neat I suppose.
